NASHVILLE – After earning South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Men’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades Monday, redshirt senior guard Devin Whitfield was named Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Tuesday morning for his superb performances last week. Helping lead the second-ranked Lincoln Memorial University men’s basketball team to a pair of victories, the 6-foot-5 wing torched the nets in shooting 63.3 percent from the field and averaged 26.5 points for the week.
After missing the Railsplitters’ season opener on Nov. 21 and playing a limited role in LMU’s road win at Coker back on Nov. 24, Whitfield has been unstoppable and has scored over 20 points in three-straight outings.
Aiding the Railsplitters to their first undefeated calendar year in program history, the Lipscomb, Ala. (McAdory HS), native scored a season-high 32 points by shooting 13-for-20 from the floor with four three pointers in LMU’s 109-62 non-conference home blowout of Campbellsville University Harrisburg this past Saturday. That performance came on the heels of 21 points and 6-for-10 shooting, including 4-for-7 from deep, during the Railsplitters’ 109-76 SAC road rout of Catawba last Wednesday afternoon. The preseason All-American went a perfect 7-for-7 at the line in the two wins and connected on 50 percent of his three-point attempts (8-of-16). Whitfield also grabbed a trio of rebounds and handed out three assists.
In four games this season, Whitfield is averaging 20.5 points while shooting 60.8 percent overall and 43.3 percent from three-point range.
