Union Athletics
LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Union University men’s basketball posted a 59-55 win over the University of West Alabama Friday night. Union improved to 7-4 overall and in Gulf South Conference West play. West Alabama fell to 3-2 on the season and in league play.
The teams went back and forth through the first seven minutes of play before West Alabama went on a 14-0 run to lead 23-12 with 8:19 left to play. Union responded by outscoring West Alabama 18-9 in the remainder of the half but was unable to take the lead. West Alabama led 32-30 at the break.
In the second half, Tylandrius Parks opened the scoring with five points to give the Bulldogs a 35-32 lead. There were three lead changes in the half before Parks made a three-pointer to give Union a 51-49 lead with 7:13 left to play. UWA worked back to tie the game, 55-55, with 1:21 on the clock. A pair of jumpers by freshman Justin Debuck sealed the 59-55 win for Union.
Union was led by Parks who tied his season-high with 20 points while going 5-6 from three-point range. Hunter Vick added 12 points. JC Hawkins led with eight boards. Hawkins and Vick each dished out three assists. The Bulldogs shot 51-percent from the field, 46-percent (5-11) from 3-point range, and 55-percent (6-11) from the free-throw line.
West Alabama was led by Shardarrion Allen 15 points and Justin Allison with 7 rebounds. The Tigers shot 38 percent from the field, 30 percent (7-23) from 3-point range, and 67 percent (6-9) from the free-throw line
Union and West Alabama split the weekend series two weeks ago at Union.
The two teams will play again, Saturday, January 30 at UWA at 2:00 p.m.
