LAKELAND, Fla. – The Freed-Hardeman University men’s basketball team (6-1,2-0 MSC) saw their six-game winning streak to start the season come to an end on Friday at the hands of Florida College (6-3), 98-92, in Day One of the Southeastern University Classic.
To start the game, both teams came out firing, with no shortage of offense in the contest. The Falcons would get hot from three and separate from the Lions midway through the half, leading by as many as 13. The Lions would cut the lead to nine going into the halftime break trailing, 55-46.
To start the second half, the Lions would score the first five points and gain some momentum early. The Falcons would respond and stretch their lead to 14 midway through the half. The teams would trade blows, as the Falcons had an answer for every Lions run.
With under two minutes remaining, the Lions trailed by 10, but key late-game baskets by Kortland Martin and Wanya King cut the lead to four with under a minute to play. The Falcons would then put the game away at the free-throw line to secure the victory
The Lions shot nearly 60 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond-the-arc in the loss, while the Falcons shot 50 percent from the field and 38 percent from beyond-the-arc.
Martin would lead the Lions in scoring with a game high 28 points, King had 19 points, and Luka Filipovic notched his second straight 13-point performance.
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday for day two of the Southeastern University Classic against the host team (RV) Southeastern University. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
